PGT Window Installation: The Pasadena Owner’s Guide
PGT window installation in Pasadena typically runs $850 to $2,400 per window installed, depending on size, frame material, and whether you’re replacing a single unit or matching existing impact-rated glass. We stock PGT-compatible hardware and weatherstripping on our trucks, and most single-window swaps are done in one visit. The way most Pasadena homeowners discover they need us: a window that won’t close flush, a cracked sash corner, or condensation fogging between panes that wasn’t there last summer. That’s when the call comes in.
We’re Juniper Windows Pasadena, an independent PGT product installer. We’re not affiliated with PGT corporate, but we’ve been putting their windows into Southern California homes since 2001, and we know exactly which parts fail on which series, and why.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
PGT builds windows across several series lines, and the parts are not universally interchangeable. Here’s what we work with in Pasadena:
- WinGuard – PGT’s impact-rated aluminum and vinyl line. Common in Pasadena hillside homes where wind-borne debris ratings matter. Uses proprietary balance springs and reinforced corner keys.
- Spectrum – Vinyl replacement windows with narrower sightlines. The sashes on these are lighter, but the weatherstripping channels wear faster in sun exposure, especially on west-facing walls.
- Premier – The value vinyl series. Simpler hardware, fewer parts, but the corner welds are the first thing to check if a sash is racking.
- Custom Impact (non-impact) – A lot of Pasadena homes have custom-sized PGT orders. If the window has a PGT label etched in the corner glass, snap a photo. The model number and IGCC code tell us everything we need.
The gotcha we see most often: a homeowner orders a generic vinyl window and assumes it’ll match the old PGT unit. The glass pack thickness on WinGuard is 7/16-inch. A standard 3/4-inch insulated unit won’t seat correctly in the frame. Measure the glass thickness before you buy anything.
OEM parts for PGT windows are available and worth the price for anything structural: balance systems, locking hardware, corner keys. For weatherstripping and glazing beads, quality aftermarket equivalents work fine, and we’ll tell you honestly which is which. Sean Mackey keeps a running list in his truck of which PGT series take which aftermarket profile, because spending $60 on OEM glazing bead when a $9 generic fits identically is the kind of waste we don’t pass on.
Signs Your PGT Window Installation Is Failing
- The window won’t stay up. The balance spring or tilt latch has worn. PGT vinyl sashes depend on a coil or spiral balance that loses tension over 10 to 15 years, and sun exposure on south-facing Pasadena windows accelerates it.
- You feel a draft with the window locked. The weatherstripping has compressed, or the sash has shifted out of square from frame settling. Pasadena’s clay soil expands and contracts with rain and drought, and older frames do move.
- Condensation or haze between the panes. The spacer seal inside the insulated glass unit has failed. Once that seal goes, the unit is done. No repair kit fixes it; the glass pack gets replaced.
- The lock snaps but the window still moves. The keeper and latch are misaligned, often because the sash frame warped slightly. This is a hardware replacement on most PGT series, not a full window swap.
- Water stains or soft wood around the frame. The flashing or exterior seal behind the window has failed, and Pasadena’s winter rains do the rest. We pull the trim, inspect the rough opening, and re-flash properly. Sometimes the window survives; sometimes the frame doesn’t.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Installed PGT window replacement in Pasadena runs:
- Single-hung or single-hung vinyl (36″ x 48″): $850 to $1,400 installed
- WinGuard impact-rated (same size): $1,500 to $2,400 installed
- Custom-sized or oversized units (60″ x 48″ and above): $1,800 to $3,200 installed
- Hardware-only repair (balance spring, latch, weatherstripping): $140 to $390 installed
What drives the range: frame material (vinyl is lower, aluminum higher), impact-rated versus standard glass, whether the existing flange and flashing can be reused, and whether we’re matching stucco or siding trim on the exterior. Every quote is written, line by line, before any work starts. The price you see is the price you pay. And every PGT installation carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the work isn’t right, we make it right, parts and labor, in writing, for a full year.
DIY or Call Us?
For hardware swaps like weatherstripping, a loose handle, or a glazing bead that’s popped out, a careful homeowner with a screwdriver can usually handle it. We’ll tell you exactly what to order and how to check the profile before you unscrew anything.
But glazing, sash removal, and anything involving tension balance systems on PGT windows is where we see homeowners get hurt or damage the frame. Vinyl windows hide coil springs under tension; when one lets go unexpectedly, the bracket becomes a projectile. If the window is fogged between panes, call us. That’s a glass pack replacement, and it requires ordering the correct spacer thickness and getting the sash out without breaking the welds. If the frame isn’t right, nothing else matters – let’s start there. Call (626) 657-5977 and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s a $9 part or a full unit replacement.
FAQs
A properly installed PGT window should last 20 to 30 years in Pasadena, but seals and balance systems typically need attention at the 10 to 15 year mark. UV exposure on south- and west-facing walls shortens the weatherstripping lifespan to about 8 to 12 years in our experience. Call (626) 657-5977 for a free estimate on any PGT window that’s underperforming.
Yes, if the failure is in the hardware. Balance springs, tilt latches, locking mechanisms, and weatherstripping are all replaceable parts, and that’s usually a $140 to $390 fix. If the glass seal has failed or the vinyl frame is cracked or warped, the window gets replaced. We’ll tell you which one you’re dealing with before any money changes hands.
Most single-window PGT installations take 2 to 4 hours from removal to final trim and cleanup. Full-frame replacements with stucco or siding work can run a full day. We send before-and-after photos of every job, and you get a live arrival time before our technician shows up.
We stock common PGT hardware – balance springs, tilt latches, weatherstripping profiles, and locking components – on our trucks in Pasadena. Custom glass packs and specific WinGuard components get ordered direct, which typically adds 5 to 7 business days. Call (626) 657-5977 with your window’s corner label info and we can tell you over the phone whether it’s on the truck or on order.
