Therma-Tru Door Installation: The Pasadena Owner’s Guide
We stock, match, and install Therma-Tru door components throughout Pasadena, with most complete door installation jobs running between $850 and $2,400 depending on the model, frame condition, and hardware involved. If your Therma-Tru door is dragging, sticking, or letting daylight through the weatherstrip, you’re usually looking at a threshold, hinge, or sill problem rather than a full door replacement. The most common discovery path we see: a homeowner notices the door no longer latches cleanly, checks the strike plate, then realizes the threshold has settled or the weatherstrip has compressed to nothing. That’s where we start.
Sean Mackey and our Pasadena crew have been installing and servicing Therma-Tru doors long enough to know which parts fail first and which ones are worth repairing versus replacing. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Therma-Tru, but we work with their products daily and keep the most common components on hand.
Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To
Therma-Tru builds door systems across several series: the Classic-Craft, Fiber-Classic, Smooth-Star, Pulse, and Benchmark lines. Each has different sill profiles, hinge layouts, and weatherstrip geometry. A door slab from a Classic-Craft Mahogany collection will not drop into a Benchmark frame without modification, and the corner seal pads differ between the Pulse and Smooth-Star series. Check the hinge-side edge of your door slab: Therma-Tru stamps a manufacturing code and often a series name on a label near the bottom hinge. If that label is gone, measure the slab thickness. Most Therma-Tru entry doors are 1-3/4 inches thick, but some Benchmark doors run 1-5/8 inches, and that eighth of an inch changes which threshold cap and sweep you need.
On OEM versus aftermarket: Therma-Tru’s own weatherseal and threshold components are engineered to fit their specific kerf cuts and sill profiles. Aftermarket equivalents exist and some are decent, but we’ve pulled too many universal sweeps off Therma-Tru doors that leaked air because the kerf depth was off by a fraction. For anything that seals weather or supports the door’s weight, we recommend OEM. For cosmetic items like brickmould or interior casing, quality aftermarket material works fine and often saves $40 to $80 per opening.
Signs Your Therma-Tru Door Installation Is Failing
- Daylight visible under the door or along the sides. The threshold cap has worn flat or the Q-Lon weatherstrip has compressed. In Pasadena’s dry heat, rubberized seals harden and lose rebound faster than in coastal climates, which means a seal that looked fine two summers ago may be dead now.
- The door scrapes the threshold or jamb when you open it. This is usually hinge sag. Therma-Tru doors are heavy, and over time the top hinge screws can pull loose from the jamb, tilting the slab forward. Catching this early usually means a hinge adjustment or longer screws. Catching it late can mean replacing a gouged sill.
- The latch no longer reaches the strike plate. House settlement, hinge wear, or foundation movement shifts the frame just enough that the latch bolt misses the hole. Pasadena’s clay-heavy soil expands and contracts with seasonal moisture, and we regularly see doors go out of alignment after heavy rain winters.
- You can feel air moving around the door on a calm day. Failed corner seal pads at the top corners of the frame, or a deteriorated sill nose gasket. These are small parts that have a big effect on your AC bill.
- The door binds in summer or swings different in winter. Fiberglass and composite doors expand and contract less than wood, but the frame can still move with humidity swings. If the reveal between slab and jamb changes by season, the frame was likely installed without proper shimming at the hinges and latch points.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a Therma-Tru door installation in Pasadena, expect to pay $850 to $2,400 installed, depending on what’s being replaced. A straight threshold and weatherseal replacement on an existing healthy slab typically runs $180 to $380 parts and labor. A full door slab swap with new hinges, weatherseal, and threshold lands between $850 and $1,900 for most fiberglass and composite models. If the frame itself is compromised, rotted, or out of square, a complete frame-and-slab installation starts around $1,600 and can reach $2,400 or more for larger openings, sidelights, or specialty glass.
Every Juniper Windows Pasadena job gets a written price before work starts. That price includes parts, labor, hardware, and haul-away of the old components. No change orders, no “we found something in the wall” surprise charges. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: 365 days, parts and labor, in writing. If something’s not right within a year, we come back and make it right, no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
Door installation work is not high-tension like a garage spring, but it can still go sideways quickly. A misaligned sill can channel water into your subfloor. A door that’s over-shimmed at the hinge will rack the frame, and within months you’ll be fighting a latch that won’t catch. If all you’re doing is swapping a compression-type weatherseal insert, most homeowners can handle that with a utility knife and patience. Beyond that, the weight of a Therma-Tru slab, the precision of threshold height adjustment, and the geometry of getting reveal gaps even on all three sides is where we earn our keep.
If you’ve looked at the hinges, checked the label, and you’re still not sure what’s going on, call us at (626) 657-5977. We’ll send someone out, diagnose it, and give you a written price. If the frame isn’t right, nothing else matters – let’s start there.
FAQs
A properly installed Therma-Tru door in Pasadena should last 20 to 30 years on the slab, with weatherseal and threshold components needing replacement every 5 to 8 years depending on sun exposure and daily use. Our installation work is covered for 365 days, parts and labor, in writing.
In most cases, yes. Thresholds, weatherseal, hinges, sweeps, and strike plates are all replaceable components. The decision comes down to the slab condition: if the fiberglass skin is intact and the foam core hasn’t absorbed water, repair is almost always the cheaper path. Call (626) 657-5977 and we’ll tell you honestly which side of that line your door falls on.
A threshold and weatherseal replacement takes 45 to 90 minutes. A slab swap runs about 3 to 4 hours. A full frame-and-slab installation typically takes 5 to 7 hours, including haul-away and cleanup. Wet-set sill pans or significant frame repair may add time, and we’ll tell you that before the written quote, not after.
We keep common Therma-Tru thresholds, Q-Lon weatherseal, corner pads, hinges, and sweeps on our service trucks. If your door needs a series-specific part we don’t have on hand, we order it direct and most Pasadena jobs are back on the schedule within 3 to 5 business days. We also work with PGT, CGI, and CWS door and window lines, so if you have a mixed household of brands, we can typically handle everything in one visit.
