ES Windows Window Replacement: The Pasadena Owner’s Guide
ES Windows window replacement in Pasadena typically runs $450 – $1,100 per window installed, depending on glass package, frame material, and whether the sash or the full frame needs swapping. We stock ES Windows-compatible parts on our trucks, and most single-window replacements are done in one visit. The usual discovery moment is a room that suddenly won’t stay warm, a sash that sticks or drops, or condensation you can’t wipe away from the inside of the glass.
We’re an independent Pasadena window and door company, not affiliated with ES Windows. But we work with their products daily, and we know which parts fail, which ones hold up, and exactly what to order so you’re not waiting three weeks for the wrong gasket.
Which ES Windows Models This Applies To
ES Windows makes a few distinct lines, and the replacement path differs for each. The most common in Pasadena are the ES-700 series (aluminum, thermally broken, often spec’d on mid-century homes) and the ES-500 series (narrower sightlines, popular on condos and apartments where the HOA mandates a specific profile). We also see ES Windows’ vinyl line on newer builds in northeast Pasadena.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners miss: ES Windows stamps a glass code on the spacer bar between the panes. If you can read that code before calling, we can often have the exact replacement glazing unit ready before we even see the window. If the code’s faded, we measure the visible glass width and height to the nearest 1/16 inch, then check the frame pocket depth. A 7/8-inch pocket takes a different IGU than a 1-inch pocket, and guessing wrong means a window that won’t seat or seal.
On OEM versus aftermarket: for ES Windows glass units, we use OEM-matched insulated glass whenever the window is under warranty or the homeowner wants the exact low-E coating and spacer color. For hardware like sash locks and rollers, quality aftermarket equivalents often last longer than the original, and they cost 30 – 40% less. We’ll tell you which is which before you spend a dollar.
Signs Your ES Windows Window Replacement Is Failing
- Condensation between the panes. The desiccant inside the spacer bar has saturated, and the IGU seal is dead. This is the single most common ES Windows failure we see in Pasadena, particularly on west-facing walls that take full afternoon sun and push the sealant through decades of thermal cycling.
- Sash drops when you open it. The spiral balances or block-and-tackle springs have fatigued. On ES-700 aluminum sashes, the channel balance is a specific length and tension rating; installing a generic one means the sash will never hold position properly.
- You can feel drafts around the closed window. Weatherstripping has compressed or the corner seals have separated. We trace it with a smoke pencil during the estimate so we know we’re replacing the right seal, not guessing.
- Lock or crank is stripped or frozen. ES Windows hardware is compact and specific. A stripped crank gearset may not look like a “window replacement,” but on casement units it’s the part owners call us about most after a few seasons of Pasadena’s dry heat and dust.
- Glass is foggy, wavy, or has a visible crack that’s spreading. Impact-rated and tempered units don’t fail slowly; they fail suddenly. If you have a crack propagating, call before the glass drops out of the frame.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Work scope | Typical Pasadena price range |
|---|---|
| Glass-only replacement (IGU, standard low-E) | $450 – $700 per window |
| Glass + hardware (balance, lock, weatherstripping) | $600 – $900 per window |
| Full sash or full frame swap | $800 – $1,100 per window |
These are installed prices, parts and labor together. What moves the number: glass package (impact-rated adds roughly $150 – $250 per unit), frame material, second-story access, and whether the opening needs any rot correction once we pull the old unit. Every quote is written, line-itemed, and locked before any work starts, per our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something isn’t right within a year, we fix it. Parts and labor. In writing.
DIY or Call Us?
You can absolutely test the sash for play, photograph the glass code, and check whether the weep holes at the bottom of the frame are clogged with debris. A clogged weep hole causes leaking that looks like a failed window and costs nothing to fix.
What you should not DIY: pulling an IGU out of an ES Windows aluminum frame. The glazing bead is tight, the corners are sharp, and a slipped pry bar can score the frame so badly the next unit won’t seal. We’ve also seen DIY seals fail in the first rain because the internal foam tape wasn’t replaced. One more thing: glass units are heavy. A 60-inch-by-60-inch tempered IGU is a two-person lift, and a dropped unit is a shard cleanup, not a save. Sean Mackey will tell you the same thing: if the frame isn’t right, nothing else matters, let’s start there. Call (626) 657-5977 and we’ll measure it properly the first time.
FAQs
With proper installation and a quality IGU, an ES Windows replacement should last 15 to 20 years in Pasadena’s climate before seal failure recurs. West-facing windows in full afternoon sun tend to fail closer to the 12-year mark because the sealant bakes harder and faster. Call (626) 657-5977 and we’ll tell you honestly whether your other windows are approaching the same age.
Yes, in many cases. If the frame is square, the glazing bead is intact, and the failure is a fogged IGU or worn hardware, we replace exactly those components and leave the frame in place. If the frame itself is out of square, corroded, or damaged, a full replacement is the only correct fix. We’ll show you the difference during the estimate.
Most single-window replacements take two to three hours on-site, including cleanup and a function check of the new unit. If we’re doing multiple windows on the same wall, we schedule one day and work through the set. The written estimate includes the exact scope and timeline before you approve anything.
We stock common ES Windows hardware: sash balances, crank gearsets, locks, weatherstripping profiles, and the spacer-bar seals ES Windows uses across their standard lines. Custom-sized IGUs are ordered to spec and typically arrive within 5 to 7 business days. We also carry parts for PGT, CGI, and CWS windows, so if you have a mixed house, we can handle it in one visit.
